What is Counselling?

Counselling is a form of psychological or talking therapy that offers people chance to change how they feel, maybe view things differently and ultimately gain a sense of overall wellbeing.

What is Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing [EMDR]?

The mind usually heals itself naturally in the same way the body does. Much of our natural coping mechanisms occur during sleep, in particular Rapid Eye Movement [REM] Sleep.

Often disturbing events happen that stay with us in our memories and we feel distressed when we thing about them. The brain cannot process traumatic or stressful experiences as it ordinarily does. The memory becomes ‘frozen in time’, and remembering the distressing event may feel as bad as going through it for the first time because the images and feelings haven’t changes. Such memories have a lasting negative effect that interferes with the way we see the work and how we relate to other people.

Advantages of EMDR:

    • Treatment reduces symptoms
    • Conducted in session [no homework]
    • EMDR works quickly [2 – 7 sessions]
    • Benefits are maintained over time

Reports show that it has been highly effective in treating clients who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or have undergone extremely traumatic situations.  Further to this, EMDR also has a high level of success in treating conditions involving depression, performance anxiety, constant brooding or worrying, low self-esteem, bad temper, relationship problems, sleep problems, illness, or injury.

What is the EMDR session like?
During EMDR, the therapist works with the client to identify a specific problem as the focus of the treatment session. The client then calls to mind the disturbing issue or event, what was seen, felt, heard and thought.

The therapist will the begin eye movements or other bilateral stimulation. These eye movements are used until the client’s memory becomes less disturbing to them, and associated with a positive thought or belief. The client can still recall what happened, but it is not as upsetting.

Please ask Michelle for further information with regards to EMDR and/or www.emdraa.org.au provides detailed information with regards to this technique plus current research and peer reviewed articles.

What is 1-2-3 Magic and Emotional Coaching?

This program can be taught in individual counselling sessions or within the group environment.

The 1-2-3 Magic and Emotional Coaching Parenting Program is based on two underlying perspectives on parenting: first, children can be taught to respond more flexibly when they are frustrated or upset. Second, parent/s can be taught easy-to-use skills they can use at particular parenting moments. The program aims to teach flexible, effective and well researched ways to better manage behaviour in children aged 3 to 12. It is a skills development based program that focuses on supporting parents in the management of difficult behaviour in children, encourage positive behaviour and strengthen relationships.

    What about privacy and confidentiality?

I understand that clients are often concerned about their privacy and confidentially.

All personal information gathered during the provisions of the psychological service will remain confidential and secure except where:

    • It is subpoenaed by a court, or
    • Failure to disclose the information would place you or another person at serious or imminent risk; or
    • Your prior approval has been obtained to:
    1. Provide a written report to another professional or agency [e.g. GP]; or
    2. Discuss the material with another person [e.g. parents, employer]; or
    3. If discolsure is otherwise required or authorised by law.

At the initial session I will discuss with you:

    • How counselling works and answer your questions
    • Help set goals that you would like to achieve
    • Issues of confidentiality
    • Explain the Medicare process and how Medicare rebates can help reduce your expenses.
